It’s another Thursday to take a step back in time to remember past events and how they’ve affected us. This Thursday on our Vasiti special Throwback Thursday, we take a step back in time to remember sixteen great events of 2018.
These were events that were on the headlines of every newspaper there is in the country. Some of which we are not proud of and others that a precious to us.

Major News Stories Of 2018
Air Force Helicopter Crashes In North East (January 2018)
Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Mi-17 Helicopter suffered a mishap while undertaking a mission in the ongoing counterinsurgency operation in the North East Nigeria.
The incident occurred as a result in significant damage to the helicopter. Although there was no loss of lives, The actual cause of the crash has not been determined.
Dapchi Schoolgirls Kidnapping (February 19th 2018)
On February 19, 2018, one hundred and ten schoolgirls aged 11–19 years old were kidnapped by the Boko Haram terrorist group from the Government Girls’ Science and Technical College (GGSTC).
The school is located at Dapchi, located in Bulabulin, Yunusari Local Government area of Yobe State, in the northeast part of Nigeria.
The Federal Government of Nigeria deployed the Nigerian Air force and other security agencies to search for the missing schoolgirls and to hopefully enable their return. The governor of Yobe State, Ibrahim Gaidam blamed the Nigerian soldiers for having removed a military checkpoint from the town.
Married Siblings Undergo Spiritual Cleansing (March 2018)
The family of Lewis Ezeibekwe in Anambra State, underwent a spiritual cleansing spearheaded by the parish priest, Rev Fr. Ignatius Onwuatuegwu, of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
However, The cleansing was followed after the siblings were jointed in marriage by their elder brother.
BBNaija Winner Miracle Receives His Car And NGN 25 Million (April 2018)
Miracle who won the Big Brother Nigeria Reality TV Show receives his reward after few weeks the show wrapped up.
So Miracle snatched his reward on the 30th of April after receiving several praises and recommendations for his appearance and influence on the show.
The Big Brother Nigeria Reality TV Show which was sponsored by several institutions and media is the second of it’s kind, following the end of larger place Big Brother Africa.
Boko Haram Ambush In Borno Leaves Five Soldiers Dead (May 2018)
Troops of 271 Tasks Force Battalion deployed in Operation Lafiya Dole today Thursday 31 May 2018, while on clearance operation along Pridang – Bitta in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, fought through an ambush staged by elements of Boko Haram Terrorists.
During the fight troops ran into Improvised Explosive Device (IED) buried along Pridang – Bitta road by Boko Haram Terrorists.
So after encountering the ambush and Five fine military personnel paid with their lives.
UNILAG Vows To Probe Sex-For-Marks Allegations (May 2018)
The management of University of Lagos, UNILAG, vowed to thoroughly investigate the allegation of sexual harassment leveled against one of its lecturers.
The university went further to say this: “The management has a zero tolerance for allegations pertaining to sexual impropriety and has a well-established policy against such practices.”
Otedola Bridge Fire Accident (June 27th 2018)
The Otedola Bridge fire accident occurred on the Otedola Bridge at the Lagos end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Where a tanker lorry fully loaded with petroleum product fell, leaked and exploded on 27 June 2018.
The massive fire at the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway broke out after the explosion of a petroleum filled tanker lorry leading to the transfer of flames to other vehicles approaching the lorry on the busy road.
This event lead to a total of 15 casualties and a loss of 54 vehicles.
Nigerian Schoolgirls Win Contest At Silicon Valley (August 11th 2018)
VP Osibanjo Orders Immediate Overhaul Of SARS (August 2018)
The order follows persistent complaints and critical reports about the activities SARS. The complaints border on allegations of human rights violation.
Osinbajo instructed the IGP to ensure that any unit that emerges from the overhaul is intelligence-driven, restricted to the prevention and detection of armed robbery, kidnapping, apprehension of offenders linked to the stated offences, and nothing more
Arrest Of Over 50 Suspected Gay Men In Lagos (August 2018)
No fewer than 57 suspected gay men were arraigned by operatives of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly gathering to conduct initiation rites in the state.
The initiation reportedly took place around 1 AM on Sunday, August 26, 2018, at a hotel in the Egbeda area of the state.
Two Nigerian Army Air force Jet Crash in Abuja (September 2018)
Two aircraft belonging to the Nigerian Air Force suffered a mishap in the Katampe area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, on Friday the 28th of September 2018.
The number of people injured in the incident could not be ascertained as of the time of this report, as efforts were still ongoing by the military to attend to the situation.
Floods Kill About 100 People Across Nigeria (September 2018)
Torrential rains unleashed floods in different parts of Nigeria over the month of September.
Killing at least 100 people and damaging thousands of homes, according to officials. A national disaster was declared in four states – Kogi, Niger, Anambra and Delta – over the flooding, meaning that the federal government had taken over the search, rescue and rehabilitation of victims.
ASUU Embarks on Indefinite Strike (November 4th 2018)
The Academic Staff Union Of Universities on the 4th of November embarked on an indefinite strike action. The strike was over failed Federal government agreements.
Also, The strike action which has lingered for several weeks now remains one of the major news stories of 2018.
Rio Ferdinand Hits Lagos for Weekend “Made of More” (November 30th 2018)
Former Premier League footballer, Rio Ferdinand, arrived in Lagos to work with Guinness.
He took part in a series of activities and events to experience the passion of Nigeria’s football fans first-hand.
Also joining local football teams as part of a coaching clinic. He also met fans and competition winners at the Guinness Africa Stadium viewing center event.
EFCC Arrests Lebanese with $2M at Abuja Airport (November 2018)
The suspect was picked up following intelligence report that he had on him undeclared huge sums of money aboard the Egypt Airline bringing him from the Kano Airport en route Lebanon.
At the point of arrest, a search on his luggage, uncovered $2,104,936, £163, 740 and €144,680.
Four Policemen Arrested For Robbery In Lagos (December 26th 2018)
Four policemen attached to Ijanikin Division in the Lagos State Police Command have been arrested for allegedly robbing one Theodore Ifunnaya of 350,000 CFA (about N221,508).
Also, Mr Oti said that the policemen faced dismissal if found guilty.
