United Nations Economic Commission Internship Program 2019
Applications are now open for the United Nations Economic Commission Internship Program 2019.The internship in the Division of International Trade and Integration of the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean in Santiago, Chile lasts 2 to 6 months but depending on the needs of the Office. The division select candidates throughout the posting period on an “as-needed” basis.
The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean is one of the five regional Commissions of the United Nations. It was founded in 1948 with the purpose of contributing to the region’s economic and social development. Its mission includes the design, monitoring and evaluation of public policies and the provision of advisory services, expertise and training to Governments as well as support for regional and international cooperation and coordination activities.
Daily responsibilities depend on the individual’s background and the internship period. Duties may include:
Processing statistics and performing econometrics
Assistance in drafting and preparing official documents
Attending and summarizing conferences and meetings
Document, legal and internet research
Assistance during conferences
Working on web-presentations
Interns work on a full-time basis (work five days per week; 35 hours) in the Division/Section to which they are assigned but they may undertake flexible working arrangements subject to certain conditions.
The internship constitutes a volunteering task. The sponsoring institution covers all the costs of travel and accommodation including living expenses. But Interns are not eligible to apply for professional offices. Also, the organisation avails interns from the appointment into positions at the professional level and above for a period of six months following the end of their internship.
The scheme pays due regard to the importance of recruiting the staff but on as wide a geographical basis as possible. The United Nations places no restrictions on the eligibility of men and women to participate in any capacity but under conditions of equality in its principal and subsidiary organs. The United Nations Secretariat is a non-smoking environment.
The selected applicants get the opportunity to work with one of the regional commissions of the United Nations during the internship period.
Planning and Organizing
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
(a) enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent or higher);
(b) enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
(c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) but if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation.
But for this internship, studies in the area of economics, international relations, law and statistics is desirable.
Although applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme but they desire experience in areas related to international trade and integration.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. They require Fluency in English and Spanish but they also value the knowledge of another UN official language.
It requires completed online application (Cover Note and Personal History Profile). They do not review incomplete applications. The Cover Note must include:
Degree programme (What is the applicant currently studying or what has he/she studied?)
Graduation Date (When will he/she graduate or when did he/she graduate from the programme?)
List the IT skills and programmes that he/she is proficient in
List top three areas of interest
Explain why he/she the best candidate for this specific internship.
In the online Personal History Profile, include all past work experiences, IT skills but with three references. Due to the high volume of applications received, they contact only successful candidates.
