Meet Sylvia Aputazie, our Student Entrepreneur of the week:
I am Miss Sylvia Aputazie.
A 300 level student of Medicine and Surgery, University of Ibadan
My business name is Suits and Sneakers. We deal in Suits, Sneakers and Human Hair imported from factories all around the world.
On what inspired her to not just start a business, but also build a brand around it;
The real Inspiration behind starting a business as a student was the need to earn passive income for myself.
Later down the journey, it became more of providing affordable products to my clients.
Anything to keep them happy.
I had just moved into school and I saw lots of business opportunities for undergraduates that were not being fully maximized. People were buying sneakers and human hair at exorbitant prices because they didn’t know any better
I decided to provide the same service but at a more affordable cost and at better quality to my customers.
For Miss Sylvia, the list is endless when it comes to impacts having a business has had in her;
Well, business has had mixed impacts. Some good, some not so good.
The positive side is: I’ve attended conferences and business meetings that have opened my eyes to so much more opportunities that I will tap into fully in the future; I have met amazing people and influencers in these business meetings and also as clients and they’ve opened doors of opportunities to me.
I have made money!!😄
Now the negatives: When I started at first in 100 level, I wasn’t able to handle both school and business. My grades were going low and at some point I had to stop. I paused for a while till I got promoted to 200 level.
Also, at some point in a business, sales don’t go as planned or as you want them. At those times, I got encouragement from friends and I took courage from the why behind my business.
It wasn’t easy, but I pulled myself back up.
Building balance between school and your business is not small work; here’s how she handles it;
Striking a balance was difficult at first, as I pointed out earlier. I didn’t know how to.
I had to take a long pause, to relax and restrategize.
I sought advice from mentors who had businesses while in school and they asked me to focused on my main assignment and make out some time for the business.
I was forced to make a schedule and stick to it.
Make a time to read and a time to promote my business online afterwards.
To be honest, it wasn’t easy, sometimes I just want to keep on reading business books or checking for inspiration online, and neglect my studies.
But having mentors and friends that you’re accountable to, attending classes regularly and joining study groups, made the job easier.
On how she built and grew her customer base;
Building a Customer base at first was difficult. I used to be shy and reserved and didn’t know students except those in medical school.
But I had to break out of my shell, which is a positive thing, as I am more bold now. I ran Ads on WhatsApp TVs to begin with.
I asked my friends to help me repost on their status and tell friends.
I told people I met in church and events what i sold, exchanged numbers with them and let them view my status.
I don’t really have a grasp on Instagram and Twitter yet, but I’ve gotten some customers from social media.
She also had a lot to say to upcoming student entrepreneurs:
My advice for upcoming student entrepreneurs is this;
Remember the main reason why you came to school, don’t let your studies fail because of business.
No matter how many people scream ‘School is a Scam’ or ‘Your grades won’t matter’ please concentrate.
Choose a line of business you love, or develop love for it. It’s important because of the period of depression that comes from sometimes.
Read extensively and develop skills for any business you’re about to go into; Surround yourself with like minds; Ask questions and seek guidance; Be genuine, honest and trustworthy with clients
