Avoiding Food Poisoning
So we arrive on another season of love and sharing. A season to be grateful for everything and everyone around you. The joy of Christmas can be overwhelming and can cause a flow of forgetfulness for the most basic thing.
That said, the Christmas season is full of eating and merry, a season packed with lots of activities that can sway you from basic healthy habits.
Today on our weekly Tuesday health talk (Which is also Christmas day 2018… Yay!) we bring you six simple ways to avoid food poisoning this season.
Before we jump right in, food poisoning refers to sicknesses caused by bacteria contaminated foods.
Avoiding Food Poisoning This Christmas
Wash Your Hands Before and After Eating
The one thing you should remember to not forget is to wash your hands regularly and appropriately. It is certain that there would be lots to eat and drink but even in the excitement never forget to wash your hands.
washing your hands is not just about dipping them in soapy waters and washing. No! To wash your hands, make sure your hands are under a running water, water that pushes the dirt off your hands.
Wash your Kitchen Slab Before Cooking
So this season comes with a lot of dust and cold, perfect for bacteria that can thrive in low temperature. That said, you want to consider washing your kitchen slab before and after cooking.
Keeping your kitchen neat is also a great start to avoid poisoning. So clean and clean again to maintain and keep yourself all charged up for the coming year.
Keep Raw Meats Far
It’s especially important to keep raw meat away from ready-to-eat foods, such as salad, fruit and bread.
This is because these foods won’t be cooked before you eat them, so any bacteria that get onto the foods from the raw meat won’t be killed.
There are over millions of bacteria in just one piece of raw meat and there are over a trillion more in just 5 KG of pork.
So keeping your raw meat away from other fresh food is very ideal, and you should consider to steam the meat accordingly before eating.
Don’t Eat un-preserved Leftovers
If you have cooked food that you’re not going to eat straight away, cool it as quickly as possible (within 90 minutes) and store it in the fridge or freezer.
Ensure that you Use any leftovers from the fridge within 2 days. Do not settle to eat leftovers that were not preserved as this may result to serious food poisoning.
Keep Fridge Cool Always (-5°C)
Keep your fridge temperature below 5°C and use a fridge thermometer to check it. This prevents harmful germs from growing and multiplying.
If this is failed to be met, you wouldn’t know of any bacterial infestation on your food, and consuming such foods can cause serious food poisoning.
Avoid overfilling your fridge – if it’s too full, air can’t circulate properly, which can affect the overall temperature.
Cook Food Thoroughly
Make sure poultry, pork, burgers, sausages and kebab are cooked until steaming hot, with no pink meat inside. Don’t wash raw meat (including chicken and turkey) before cooking, as this can spread bacteria around your kitchen.
Just imagine after washing a bacteria infested meat and you dry your hands with a kitchen towel, the bacteria keeps spreading!
Freezing raw chicken reduces the levels of campylobacter bacteria but doesn’t eliminate them completely. The safest way to kill all traces of campylobacter is by cooking chicken thoroughly.
